Configuring TwonkyMedia

I ran Cidero just to verify that it could see the TwonkyMedia server. But I really wanted to put some music on the NSLU2's hard drive so TwonkyMedia would have some music files to scan into its database. Where should the music files go?

I use my NSLU2 as a general-purpose Network Attached Storage device as well as a media server, so I needed to create a suitable folder structure on the drive to separate media from other data.

This lead me to investigate how and where TwonkyMedia scans the drive to build its database. The default setting for TwonkyMedia's "Content Locations" is /share, which means it will scan all drives attached to the NSLU2 when building its database. Whoa, partner!

Here's how I configured my NSLU2 and TwonkyMedia to limit scanning to specific media folders.

First, I created a "media" share in the NSLU2 GUI. You do it like this:

  • Browse to the NSLU2's Home page.
  • Click on  Administration  and log in.
  • Click on  Advanced .
  • Click on  Shares .
  • Enter the new folder name and click on  Save As New Share .

  • I clicked the  Save  button at the bottom, too, although I don't know if this is necessary.

I then used Windows Explorer to create three sub-folders within the "media" folder:

I copied some tunes to the music folder so TwonkyMedia would have some files to scan into its database.

Now open TwonkyMedia's GUI in a browser. (http://192.168.1.77:9000)

You can see above what I entered in the Content Locations field to limit its scanning to the media folders.

Click on the Status icon to change to the TwonkyMedia home page.

Because my modified script set "scantime" to zero in the "twonkyvision-mediaserver.ini" file, TwonkyMedia has not scanned for media yet. Perhaps you'll recall my brief dissertation about reducing the number of "erase cycles" the flash drive would be subjected to. Now that I have copied some files to the NSLU2's hard drive, I need to click Rescan content directories to tell TwonkyMedia to scan the above folders for media. A few seconds later this page will reappear.

I may find other configuration settings that I want to change, but for now that's it.
